Your consultation – First step to your great smile

This consultation will help you to get acquainted with our office and learn more about orthodontics. Since every person's smile is unique, we have set aside special time to get to know you and address your orthodontic concerns.

First orthodontic visit for kids and teens
Many families schedule their first appointment when they notice crowding, bite changes, or when their dentist recommends an orthodontic evaluation. Your consultation is designed to explain what we see, whether timing is right, and what treatment options may be available for your child.

Dr. Cheng will perform a complete oral exam, sometimes with x-rays to assess your orthodontic needs and determine if this is the proper time to begin treatment.

If treatment is indicated, the next step is to obtain diagnostic records. Diagnostic records usually include impressions, radiographs, bite analysis, and photographs. Impressions are used to create duplicate models of your teeth and dental arches. Dr. Cheng will utilize the information gathered from the initial exam and the diagnostic records to determine the nature of the orthodontic problem and develop a customized treatment plan.

What to expect during your Rockford consultation

  • Meet Dr. Cheng and the orthodontic team
  • Complete a complete oral exam (and X-rays when needed)
  • Review your child’s orthodontic concerns and goals
  • If treatment is indicated, collect diagnostic records (photos, bite analysis, and other records as recommended)
  • Discuss what we found and explain recommended next steps
  • Ask questions - then make a plan together

What happens after the initial consultation?

After the initial consultation, we’ll review the diagnosis and treatment plan in plain language. If braces or clear aligners are recommended, we’ll explain the differences and help you understand what fits your teen’s bite and lifestyle.

REGULAR DENTAL CHECK UPS DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Orthodontic care works best when your child’s whole dental team is aligned. We encourage regular dental checkups and can coordinate with your family dentist if any additional dental treatment is needed before, during, or after orthodontic treatment.
It is extremely important to visit your family dentist every 6 months, more often if indicated during your orthodontic treatment to prevent development of dental caries. We are more than happy to coordinate with your family dentist if any extra dental treatment is needed before, during or after your orthodontic treatment. We work as a team with your family dentist to ensure that you are receiving the best care possible.
